pulling my friggin hair out trying to get Apple ProMax files to work well with lightroom presets. They look awful and often times the preset will just switch the profile from ApplePro to some other profile completely muddying it and making it dark. i’m disabling ApplePro and just using 12mp jpg format now
My suggestion would be to rely less on presets in general, since a lot of these will work with very specific lighting conditions. That still won't solve Apple's ProRAW format issues but in the end you will be able to get better results out of that format. I would say try using regular RAW since it will be more flexible than the compressed and highly processed JPG coming straight out of the camera.
Thanks for this very nice presentation except for the beginning you go too fast.. I know this is super easy but it was not super easy to see what exactly you did when you drag and dropped.. People always seem to forget the viewer is not sitting there with you.. other than that very helpful!
very interesting
great render, i think you forgot to texture the sesame seeds but overall great
I got lazy near the end... 😆
I think the power of your idea here is not this specific video per se. You are at the beginning of a journey … and I’m wondering what episode #25 will look like, sometime in the future. I’m assuming you will use the same prompt to gauge the advancement of the AI tools? I give you a lot of credit for taking the time to do this as a real experiment, that can be qualified over time. Trying to add some objectivity to a very subjective topic. I always appreciate your thoughtful approach to your videos.
Cheers. Glad you like the idea. Yeah at some point I will try to re-use the prompts and see if I can get better results. From what I'm reading though, in order to reach this next level of quality - at least for chatGPT - the A.I. has to consume an ungodly amount of data, which doesn't even exist yet. Really crazy stuff...
I can appreciate that you want to do an experiment, but many many people are doing this kind of thing. Honestly, I can't find the value in watching this video. I'm not learning anything and the story is devoid of any context or theme. When a human tells a story it is through the desire to communicate something, but this ai story is not communicating anything.
My guess is you haven’t actually watched the video. I’m touching on these issues right after the end of the short.
@@marvelousdecay I watched up until the ai video started, that's why i was saying, I don't see the value. I am interested in your perspective on it for sure, so I'll have a look at your finishing comments now. Perhaps it might be helpful to put a timer on the next one? that way people can skip forward to hear your thoughts on it without having to watch the ai. I realise though that would result in missing context? I don't know what else to suggest. :/
oh, wow that's not just closing comments. You said a lot about it, quite the analysis. I don't have much more to add though ^^
Why can t i find the apps
Make sure to use the search option in the app store. If you still can't find them use the app's official websites and the links there will send you to the app.
UMake a sketching app vs Shapr3D a CAD app Funny comparison …
uMake is not a sketching app. It's a modelling/CAD app just like Shapr3D.
@@marvelousdecay yeah it evolved thats true - but it is different quite different to what Shapr3D is. That’s an apple vs banana comparison
Thank you so much for this video - the only video I’m able to find that actually does a decent job of exploring 3D rendering on M2 or M3 Mac, something I do for my job! So thank you - would love to see the same video for an M3 Pro or M3 max in the newer MacBook Pro
@@studioryley Glad you liked it! I do have a newer video talking about the performance of the M3 and the future M4! Have a look at this video here: ruclips.net/video/RcHI53HV3hg/видео.htmlsi=_4aC4yP6bYN65QKu The M3 is looking good but the M4 will probably be the SoC that starts getting closer to NVidia performance.
Very thorough comparison between the the GF1 and the iphone pro. I have a Panasonic GF2 which I bought on Ebay a few days ago to go with my excellent GX80. The camera's results really are superior to a smartphone under all conditions.
Yeah all m4/3 cameras and above (APSC, medium format etc) will give so much better results. Even if they're ancient! I'm glad we have the ability to take pictures with our phones but we still have a lot of room until we reach a real's camera's quality.
Curious question: i see the person moving around the object to capture the 3D model. What happens if we have the camera fixed and move the object around, would it capture similar results?
The method you're describing can be achieved with regular photogrammetry which are supported in the Object capture API. Apple's new addition use the accelerometer among other things so you have to move around the object.
Hey Dimitris, great video! I’d love to see a comparison of the Gaussian Splatting features in Polycam, Kiri Engine, and Luma AI. Gaussian Splatting offers incredible detail, which is crucial for my applications, and I’m less interested in meshes. It would also be fantastic if you could highlight the differences between the app and web versions, especially since Luma AI allows video uploads in the app, whereas Polycam only supports this in the web version. Thanks in advance!
Is the iPhone 14 Pro better than LUMIX FZ200 bridge camera? Which has the bigger sensor?
I'm not familiar with that camera so I'm afraid I can't answer your question. My guess is that the lumix fz200 has the bigger sensor but better do some research to be on the safe side.
I’m trying to buy lumix Fz40. But idk if it gonna be good
@@Fastfast0103 Try to get a more recent cheap dslr and you'll be good to go. There are plenty from canon and other brands that can easily outperform any phone out there.
@@marvelousdecay is dslr better than digital cameras? My purpose of use is for Real Estate. Just pics of houses. Apartments. Rooms. Etc. I’ll prefer less setup and quick sharing to Mac. I was using iPhone 13 in 0.7 but it lose quality. And 0.5 is too open.

Thank you for the great video: since 4 years have passed are you thinking about doing an update comparison_
Hey there! I would say that even though things have changed in both apps when it comes to UI and functionality, the result is not much different. Shapr3D is still the better choice!
@@marvelousdecayOk, thank you!
A company like apple can never compete with nvidia in 3d rendering, fanboys could buy 50000$ M4 extreme mac for 3d rendering but professionals are not fools if they understand same performance can be achieved in 2000$ 5090.
Every RAW also takes a fully processed HEIF. You can use the the HEIF to bring back some of the higher frequency details. This seems to have somewhat improved with the 15 Pro.
What was that pigment added in 8:50 ? Light in a bottle?
That was from the "Tree of life". The light is right behind the glass which what gives it this very vibrant look. But if you're looking for the exact type of pigment I'm not sure.
You should compare to google pixel 3 raw vs 14 pro raw files, pickle 3 still win by 100miles, proraw is a joke.
27k in CB2024 is a laptop result. Desktop gets 35k.
I try Polycam and Kiri for our business, and I must say that I get much better results with Kiri than with Polycam.
Try to eliminate all variables in your testing, since photogrammetry results depend a lot on angles and lighting. So give the following a try: Test both apps with the exact same images and compare the results. Either way though if you prefer Kiri use that. No need to fix what ain't broken!
Hi, Dev from KIRI Engine here, first of all, thank you for bringing a good comparison video between KIRI and Polycom. We didn't use Apple algorithm and you said it right (except for object capture in LiDAR mode). And I truly realize the texture resolution is a big issue right now. And we will enhance this part in future updates. And about the volume thing, I saw another comment that says the truth, we developed that for side button capture. And that was the request from our valuable users. Again, very nice review and we definitely learned a lot from it. And if you have any other suggestions, feel free to contact us, and we would like to enhance them as well! Appreciate!🥰
Hey there. Great to see the team actively looking for community feedback, and great to see that you're aware of some of these issues! • As stated on the video texture resolution is quite a hindrance currently. If and when you manage to fix that, that will make recommending the app a lot easier! Great to hear that it's in the plans for future updates! • Another issue that is definitely minor compared to texture resolution has to do with object scale. The USDZ files always export with really small scale. Most objects export as 1 to 2cm in size, which means that there's a lot of resizing involved. It's not a huge deal but I would prefer a x10 multiplier rather than these small 1cm objects. There's also a couple more issues with the UI so I'll definitely try to reach out to you over email. If you don't hear from me in the coming days feel free to contact me through my email. You can find it the about section of my channel.
Hi, I understand that you left out the GS scanning but KIRI also has a featureless scanning option, which is somewhere between Photogrammetrie and NERF. I think it does work quite well on objects that would be difficult to scan with Photogrammetrie only. Also, KIRI engine has an option for a pro user to export his model in quads with a re-baked texture granted it’s lowres and of course you could do the conversion to quads yourself, but it’s still very convenient for a mobile app to have that option if you need assets fast and don’t have time to work on them. so KIRI is far from perfect but they do have a lot of good ideas and they are trying to push the boundaries of regular Photogrammetrie.
I definitely appreciate the efforts of the development team. It looks like the team is constantly adding features to the app which is great to see! About the featureless scanning: It's a good idea but I don't find it that useful. I guess it depends on what you want to do with the final mesh. Personally if I want to scan a featureless object I just sprinkle regular baby powder on the object and follow the typical photogrammetry procedures. The benefit with that is that you can get a very detailed mesh that you can then clean up and edit accordingly. The same goes for the quad mesh straight out of the app. As good as that might sound, I'm not entirely sure what the use case for it might be. I understand that it's convenient but if I'm going to use the object on a project I will adjust things myself either way, so having quads from the beginning is not so important. At least for me! As I mentioned earlier it all depends on your use case. If it fits your workflow and projects go for it!
Hi! Can you tell how you transformed those scans into pc?
Do you mean how to export them from the apps? Both applications have an export command where you pick the format you want. I picked USDZ but you also pick fbx or obj etc.
Yes! Thank you, and which program do you use in the end, is it 3d max or zbrush? I can’t recognize
The program you see in the video is Cinema 4D but when I’m preparing the final asset it’s usually a combination of Zbrush for cleaning up the scan, Substance Painter for cleaning up the texture and refining things and then Cinema 4D and Redshift for scene creation and rendering.
Nice review. You mention there is no reason for a scanning app to take over the audio, however we also do that in our app to use the volume keys as shutter control which is very convenient plus it connects to third party grips that also use this method to trigger the shutter via the Bluetooth button they use. This only happens when in the manual capture mode though and not throughout the whole app
Good point. Looks like this is what’s happening. You can use the volume buttons to take a picture. Unfortunately though the audio stops the moment you enter the app. It would be nice if there was a setting to enable/disable that option.
@@marvelousdecay agree. they could easily switch this on/off via a button in the settings.
I would like to go back to mac's but apple make it so difficult. It crazy to spend so much on a mac that date so quickly. It's not possible to upgrade the gpu after 3 years to make the machine still relivant. So if you spec out a studio costing 6000 to 8000 grand then 4 years later it's dated.
Yeah that's true. It's one of the reasons I didn't go with the first versions of the Mseries chips (M1, M2, M3) since things are still advancing pretty fast. Hopefully the new Mac Pro will have upgradeable graphics... Here's hoping..
In versions purchased on the Steam system, this iA option does not work. Only for those who "rent" the ADOBE program. Maybe it would be good to make this clear in your tutorial, to avoid frustration. As I only found out later that I couldn't do that with your tutorial hahahahahhaha
This was very _Neat!_ but I wonder - is there a way to have the points to path vary in width?
Haha nice one! About the width: I can’t think of something right now but I’m sure there’s a hack or some other way to do it.
@@marvelousdecay yeah I'm new to the software so I thought I'd ask but there doesn't seem to be a "just plug the null's scale to <__>" solution 🤔 surprisingly few online resources for this really cool piece of software, even searching the web yields lots of results about the military unit haha...
@@4.0.4 yeah it's a small software company and the software hasn't fully caught on yet, but it's incredibly powerful. Reach out to the creators on twitter. They are very friendly and incredibly helpful. They might be able to point you to the right direction.
Thanks for such a clear review! I'm getting tired of Apple paid bloggers telling me how cool the new Mac Studio is comparing to Nvidia PC :)) what a crap :) Thanks buddy!
The Mac Studio has its positives for sure. It’s an amazing editing machine and a great all rounder but when it comes to 3d rendering it’s severely lacking. I can’t blame the reviewers though. They can only test the things they’re most familiar with.
love your working process , Thank for sharing !! May I know what kind of app should I use for 3d scan
Glad you enjoy the content! If you're on a PC Reality Capture is the way to go, and if you're on a Mac either Metashape or the desktop version of Photocatch
@@marvelousdecay Thank you so so much
That's why Elon Musk said lidar is useless and simple "vision" is way more effective. Lidar is good for multipass in survey where lasers pass through foliage while camera can't see them IMO.
On top of the premium price is the fact that it is not upgradeable
And I think, like you said, a lot of these terrible designs are due to prioritizing the company's needs over the user's needs. The first day some company realized "hey, we can make money off this internet thing", we were doomed. On the other hand, I've recently encountered some web sites, ones we actually pay the company directly to use, that must have been designed by someone with severe mental health issues.
Yeah when it’s a free product you could somehow excuse the poor design choices. But when it’s a paid product the excuses start to dwindle!
Nope, it's not just you.
Love your content, what software do you use ?
Thanks! For Photogrammetry I'm using the desktop version of Photocatch and also Metashape. Both do the same thing but since Photocatch uses Apple's SDK the results are very fast.
Before even watching the video: no
:D
The scattering of the seeds look like something you could do in Blender easily with Geometry Nodes; maybe Cinema4D has something similar?
Yeah there are several ways to approach this in Cinema too. I chose the scatter brush because I like the way I can control the placement. All the manual rotations and placements after the brush application was just me being over the top for no reason! Hahaha I would no suggest anyone doing what I did at all!
@@marvelousdecay it did look awesome though (aside from the onions 😂 it made me think how I'd do the onions and I quickly realized they're actually really hard!)
Looking forward to trying it thanks!
Have fun!
Thank you very much. Did you recognize that spring-constraints are working strange, if you activate the "Motion Vector"-AOV? Seems to be a bug.
Haven't tried that but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of bug. Definitely post the issue on Redshift's forum for the developers to see and hopefully fix.
Great upload Dimitris! hey do you have any work online? For instance ArtStation?.
Thank you. I do have an Artstation account but haven’t updated it for a while. Better check my personal website (marvelousdecay.com)
Amazing video. I really love the late 80ties early 90ties for their computer innovations. Always makes me super nostalgic! I still remember that walking bottle scene file that came with C4D. I for the life of me could not figure out how they made it move. Would be interesting to have another look at it now ha ha ha. Also I really should liten more to those tracker music clips. They really had a certain vibe to them I love to this Day! Keep up making such great videos ✨
Thanks Raphael! Haha yeah the bottle and underwater scenes were some of my favorites back then! I can't remember at all how it was done but I wonder if it was PLA animation? No clue! 😆 It's so wild to think how much we've progressed since then on the technology front! Now our phones are multiple times faster than any desktop computer of that time. Crazy!
Hi Dimitris, I appreciate your knowledge and experience sharing. I have a question, am about to purchase a refurbished macbook pro max but hesitant on which one to go for, m1, m2 or m3. Of course the older models are cheaper, but when I checked on apple's website, they say that m3 chip now supports ray tracing. I would like to know, how significantly ahead is that compared to the m1/m2, let's say percentage wise. I am concerned about apps like 3d max/blender rendering. Thank you so much
When it comes to 3D rendering the M3 (Max) is significantly faster than M1 and M2. The M3 Max for example is faster than the M2 Ultra. So if you're looking to get a new machine, aim for the m3 max. If you can wait a couple more months the M4 is just around the corner. I will personally wait for the M4. From what we can tell it's going to be a nice jump in performance so if you can afford to wait you'll be better off.
@@marvelousdecay what do you think would be best: An M1 max, 32gpu, 96GB, 4TB Or M2 max, 38gpu, 64GB, 2TB Or M3 max, 40gpu, 48GB, 1TB
In terms of raw speed the M3 Max is the better option of the two. My only issue with the setup you posted is the very little SSD space and the relatively low RAM. If you can bump the M3 Max to 64GB and 2TB you'll have a nice beefy setup. But if you gotta cut something go for the 64GB Ram and keep the 1TB SSD. Just keep in mind though that you'll have to carry around an external drive to help with storage. But it's a good enough compromise.
@marvelousdecay I appreciate your response again. I might be able to upgrade after 6 months, but I need something to work with now and sell this once. So the above 3 listed were my only options.
